Our History

Fifth Street Renaissance (FSR) began as “Community Energy Systems” in 1979 with the purpose of weathering homes for elderly and low-income clients in Springfield.

The Springfield AIDS Resource Association, SARA Center, was centered around prevention, education, comprehensive care and support, housing, and advocacy services for individuals, families, and the community in Central Illinois.

Even though the Fifth Street Renaissance and SARA Center have merged, the SARA Center mission is still being carried out by current staff and our Board of Directors.

A variety of education and outreach programs are offered, including:

  • HIV Positive Support Groups
  • Active Street and Community Outreach
  • Prison Outreach
  • Drug Addiction Outreach
  • Local School District Outreach
  • Fixed site outreach targeting those individuals most at risk for contracting HIV
